Welcome to History Live!
History Live is a friendly group which meets at 7.30pm on the first Wednesday of every month between September and May in Hollinsclough Chapel Hall, near Longnor in the Staffordshire Moorlands, to listen to great speakers and to enjoy sharing an interest in local history.
Membership costs £6 a year. Members pay £2 and non members £3 per meeting, including a hot drink and our famous home-made cakes.
Become a member and join us regularly or just turn up occasionally to the subjects that interest you most; it’s entirely up to you; we guarantee you a warm welcome. Members usually join at one of the first meetings of our talks season ie September or October but if you are not able to come along to one of those and would like to join, please contact one of us here.
History Live was started by the late Sue Gaukroger and several other local people. It was Sue who came up with the name History Live. First meeting was on Sept 1st 1992. At that time it was very much a local history group of individuals who independently carried out a lot of local history research.
Every year a subject was agreed eg the last one I think was the winter of 1947. Then for one week in the summer an exhibition was put together at Home Farm. Most of the ground floor was taken over plus the outbuildings and fields. All the locals would find stuff in their attics/fields etc and bring it along. They were fantastic events and everyone loved them.
In addition to individuals doing research and the annual exhibition there were also talks just as there are now. Far more local people would come – the village has changed its demographics.
The group managed to get funding to run a number of different history courses and these helped to stimulate local interest. I think that was around 10 years ago.
Meetings have always been held in Hollinsclough Chapel Hall.
